Is posting on LinkedIn a problem?
I little while ago, maybe back in 2023, a lovely colleague recommended I talk to a particular woman who was creating an amazing network for women in business.
Being a woman in business, and based on that recommendation from a lovely colleague, I would also like to be in an amazing network of other women in business (cause that’s how humans work).
I checked out the website and booked in a call to learn more.
The day came, my phone rang and the woman on the end of the line said “what do you want? Not in the most friendly way. I felt a bit like I had interrupted her day, with my sales call for her business.
I soldiered on. I said who had recommended her business to me and would she tell me a bit more detail about her amazing network for women in business, because I might be interested in being part of it.
But I wasn’t allowed to be in her amazing network for women in business unless I participated in her course thingy first, which I didn’t think I needed (in my very own opinion).
Then she decided to look at my LinkedIn profile and proceeded to tell me that I didn’t have many followers and I didn’t even have a newsletter (which I actually did.)
At this point I decided to point out that criticising someone else’s LinkedIn profile was perhaps not the way to sell me her amazing network for women in business (that I’m not allowed to attend unless I participate in her course thingy first).
AND that I do have a newsletter (with 800 subscribers at the time) which now has over 1,000 subscribers on LinkedIn
AND more than that in my email list
AND it turned out I had just as many followers on my personal Linkedin profile as she did
AND WAY MORE followers on my business page, than hers.
At the same time we both realised that I was actually doing pretty good and we both promptly decided that perhaps her amazing network for women in business (and her stupid course) wasn’t for me.
More recently I have come across a number of people and companies who want to help me with my “digital marketing” (mostly social media "agencies") but the problem with this is when I go check out their own social media pages on various platforms, with LinkedIn being my main marketing channel (along with email and my website) I find them, well…..a bit lacking.
Now I get that a builder's house is likely to be the worst kept house, while they work on other people’s houses and I also know that it’s not all about how many followers you have….BUT if you can’t build an engaging social media page and a brand for yourself that people want to follow, I feel a bit hesitant to trust you with mine.
In addition if you are employing a social media agency who:
a) Copies the post copy from someone else (yes I saw this a month ago), and
b) Has to ask what platform you are using to create videos with highlighted captions, you shouldn’t be giving them money. #Obvs.
So seeing as I get lots of compliments on how I post on LinkedIn (and I do have a resonable number of followers, which is helpful in business), I wondered if any of the independant business owners, coaches and consultants, plus others who just want to be better as posting on LinkedIn would be interested in learning a bit more about how I do this?
Business pages are particularly tricky, but important, and I reckon mine (The Culture Ministry) is doing pretty well with over 3,000 followers.
I'm thinking I might run a free webinar with some tips and systems I use to make it easier.
If this is something that you might be interested in, I would love to hear from you.
